Five years in
Alexander Spencer didn’t just adopt pay.com.au early. They’ve watched it grow into something unrecognisable from what they first signed up for. Managing Director Sevan Tuna brought the firm on board in early 2022, and five years on, the platform looks very different.
What started as a way to centralise payments across multiple directors and credit cards has become the backbone of how the firm manages money, earns rewards, and advises its clients to do the same.
One platform, everything in
Before pay.com.au, Alexander Spencer’s payments were scattered. Multiple directors, multiple personal credit cards, multiple accounts. Points accumulating separately, unevenly, with no single view of where the money was going.
Now every payment runs through one place, integrated directly with Xero and MYOB. And the scope of what goes through the platform? Everything. “ATO payments, regular overhead expenses, rent, electricity. Anything you can think of — it goes through the platform, and we earn PayRewards points from that.”
“We put anything and everything we can think of through the platform, and we earn double or triple points from that.”
The triple dip
Most businesses earn points once on a payment. Alexander Spencer earns them three times. When an expense runs through pay.com.au using Amex, the firm earns both PayRewards and Amex Membership Rewards on the same transaction. Then when the Amex statement is paid off through the platform, they earn PayRewards again.
That includes BAS. The ATO stops accepting credit cards directly after 30 June 2027, but through pay.com.au the firm can keep paying its BAS by card. A $50,000 BAS payment at 2 points per $1 earns 100,000 PayRewards Points, before the card points are counted.
What 30 million points actually looks like
Over five years, Alexander Spencer has accumulated more than 25 million PayRewards points. Add the Amex Membership Rewards earned alongside them, and the firm has generated in excess of 30 million points in total. Sevan ran the numbers on what that’s worth: close to $250,000 in travel costs the firm hasn’t had to pay.
The most recent example: a business class trip to Rome for the Abacus Global annual conference. The flights would have cost $15,000 to $20,000 out of the business account. Instead, booked on 250,000 KrisFlyer points. The cash stayed in the business.
"I recommend pay.com.au to my clients because it makes their workflows really simple and unleashes rewards they didn't know they were missing out on."
The Advisor Program
Sevan doesn’t just use pay.com.au for Alexander Spencer, he recommends it to his clients through the Advisor Program too. The pitch is simple: go through their balance sheet, show them what their payments could be earning, and let the numbers do the talking.
For accountants still on the fence about joining, his message is direct. “First, you have to sign up and use it for yourself. Once you’ve done that, you will have no choice but to recommend it to your clients. Because we have a duty to make our clients’ lives better.” Once you know how it works, he says, it stops being something you keep to yourself. “It’s a secret that you want to actually share with the world.”
